Indicators of Concern Regarding Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth, known as the third and last set of molars to emerge, surface at the far end of the mouth, behind the second molars, both on the top and bottom. Their appearance typically falls between the late teenage years and the mid-twenties, although timings can vary. Some individuals experience this earlier or later, and a few do not develop wisdom teeth at all. While they may not always cause issues immediately upon arrival, there are numerous reasons to consider their removal.

Reasons for Wisdom Tooth Extraction:

  • Misalignment or impaction against the adjacent tooth may occur.
  • Limited space can lead to discomfort and complex issues due to overcrowding.
  • Improper positioning may result in trapped food or difficulty in cleaning, increasing the risk of decay.
  • Wisdom teeth that are impacted are more susceptible to infection.

Understanding the Procedure for Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Your dentist might perform the extraction of your wisdom teeth directly or refer you to an oral surgeon for a routine surgical procedure. The specific approach for your situation will be determined after a thorough examination. It is possible to have all four wisdom teeth removed in a single session, or the process might be spaced out over several appointments for gradual removal.

Assessment Phase

Before scheduling your extraction, a comprehensive examination of your teeth and jaw is essential. Through X-rays and detailed evaluations, we assess the alignment of your wisdom teeth and the structure of their roots. This step ensures we fully understand whether your wisdom teeth should be extracted simply or if surgical removal is warranted, aiming to eliminate any unforeseen complications.

The Extraction Procedure

During your initial consultation, you will receive detailed information on the extraction process and advice on how to prepare for it. Depending on what you and your dental professional decide, you could receive local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia to ensure your comfort. Our practice is dedicated to using the least invasive methods possible for tooth removal to promote a comfortable experience and swift recovery.

Post-Procedure Care

We advise having a companion to accompany you at the clinic, provide transportation home, and offer support as you recuperate. Post-extraction, you will receive comprehensive care instructions, including tips for a smooth and comfortable healing process. Should any questions or concerns arise post-procedure, we encourage you to contact us for support.

Cost Of A Wisdom Tooth Removal In Burnaby

The price for wisdom teeth extraction can significantly differ depending on various factors. If you’re covered by a standard insurance policy, the cost for removing a single wisdom tooth through a straightforward procedure typically ranges from $100 to over $200 out-of-pocket. For those without insurance, the price for a basic extraction can be anywhere from $200 to upwards of $600 per tooth.

Getting a precise cost estimate for wisdom teeth removal without a personal consultation is challenging, as each individual’s situation requires a customized approach determined through an oral examination. Dental extractions are categorized into simple or surgical procedures, which can help you understand the potential costs involved:

Simple Tooth Extraction

This process applies to wisdom teeth that have fully emerged into the mouth and do not present any complications. Performed under local anesthesia by a general dentist, the cost is lower if the tooth can be removed swiftly and effortlessly.

Surgical Tooth Extraction

This involves more intricate procedures for wisdom teeth that are not fully visible, impacted, have complex root formations, or are negatively affecting adjacent teeth. Due to the intricate nature of surgical extractions, they are priced higher because they need specialized care and skill.

It’s crucial to note that dental practices cannot offer a precise estimate without a direct consultation due to the complexity and variability of each case. It is essential to consult with a dentist who can assess your specific needs and discuss the most suitable treatment options.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and, most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Extracting wisdom teeth is often seen as a milestone, but it is only necessary if they cause problems like impaction or disruption to other teeth.

Today’s dentistry prioritizes patient comfort. We employ advanced methods and tools to ensure procedures are as painless as possible, work efficiently, and minimize trauma for quicker recovery. Detailed aftercare instructions will be provided to enhance your comfort and healing.

You can remove the gauze from your mouth about an hour post-operation and gently start eating, sticking to soft foods for the first day. It is important to steer clear of hot meals and using straws for a bit.

At your visit, we’ll give you tailored aftercare advice. To lower complication risks and expedite healing after your wisdom teeth removal, you should:

  • Refrain from spitting, rinsing, nose blowing, straw use, and smoking for the first day.
  • Avoid poking the surgery area with fingers or tongue.
  • Avoid foods and beverages that are hot.
  • Avoid aspirin as it can affect blood clotting.
  • Put off strenuous physical activity.

Taking three to four days off for rest or light activities post-extraction is wise. It reduces the chance of complications and aids in healing. While full recovery is typically two weeks, discomfort should be minimal.

My recent visits to Charm Dental are the best experiences at any dental office by far! The office is beautiful and staff are so kind. Everyone in the office is so personable, so it’s easy to feel comfortable. Dr. Ken is extremely knowledgeable, skilled, and so gentle with his work. He really takes his time, and talks you through the process and ensures you’re doing okay. As somebody who has never liked going to the dentist, I’m so happy I’ve found Charm Dental. Hi, Im an anxious individual that avoided the dentist for years. I couldn’t ignore it much longer and found this place on a whim when I saw free ice cream. Which I’m happy I did. Dr. Ken and his team make the atmosphere as comfortable as possible and explain everything well so you know what’s going on with each step. It made going to the dentist less worst. The receptionists are very kind (especially if you are stressed thinking you broke a tooth)and are on the ball for insurance. They explain the cost at each step to best find a treatment plan that works for you. You can also watch Disney plus while you get your teeth done. So that’s cool.
